Catch Up with Handré Potgieter,
Seabourn Ovation's Cruise Director
Handré Potgieter is delighted to have been appointed Cruise Director of our newest ship, Seabourn Ovation. Handré has been a long-time member of the Seabourn family and is excited to set sail with Seabourn Ovation in May.
Born and raised in South Africa, Cruise Director Handré discovered his passion for travel, hospitality and music at a young age. He has been working in the luxury cruise industry for the past 16 years, nine of which have been with Seabourn.
We had the opportunity to sit down with Handré and asked him a few questions about why he enjoys cruising with Seabourn and what he's most excited about in joining the new crew of Seabourn Ovation:
We last chatted with you when you were appointed Cruise Director for Seabourn Encore. What's new? How have you been? Since the launch of Seabourn Encore, I have been mostly on board and very much enjoyed being part of this wonderful team. During my time off, I trained intensively and ran both the London Marathon in April 2017 and the New York City Marathon in November 2017. My running this year was to support cancer research and was a personal goal and bucket list thing for me. I am really proud of these accomplishments. It has been an amazing year for me and I feel beyond blessed and grateful.
What destination during Seabourn Ovation's first season are you most excited to visit? The combination of Norway and Scandinavia is one of my favorites so really looking forward to going back; I love the balance between stunning scenery and culture. I am also very keen to get back to our ports of call in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.
You previously said your favorite places to visit are Sydney, Hong Kong and Cape Town. Have you added any others to your list? We are truly blessed to visit all these wonderful places. I had the chance to spend a bit more time in New York this year and it's such a great city! I do believe in balance, so aside from these pinnacle cities I have a fondness for places like Bay of Islands, Picton and Tauranga in New Zealand.
What piece of advice or tips would you give a guest who is sailing with Seabourn on Seabourn Ovation for the first time? Guests on Seabourn are such savvy travelers and tuned into life and great experiences. Our Seabourn Source App has a great new function where guests can chat/text, which opens great potential. Looking at our itinerary for the inaugural season I would recommend packing cloths to layer when you decide what to bring for your voyage.
Can we still look forward to your array of colorful bow ties? Absolutely! I'm doing my best to keep the collection fresh, fun and original. On a humorous note, lately if for some reason I revert back to my original weakness which is regular ties, guests and crew often comment and ask, "Oh Handré, where's your bow tie?" By combining bow ties, boutonnieres and pocket squares, I'm able to express my style and guests seem to really enjoy this look.
How do you spend your time when you are not on board Seabourn or out running? I love spending time with my mom and friends, playing with the dogs, cooking, gardening and just being lazy in and around my home. Music continues to be a big part of my life so I am working on a new inspirational piano album.
